As the 2024/25 tax year closes, employers across the UK must complete their end-of-year payroll duties accurately and on time. Whether you're running payroll for a small team or managing multiple employees, staying compliant with HMRC's requirements is crucial to avoid penalties and keep your records in order.

Here's a practical PAYE end-of-year checklist to help you get everything wrapped up smoothly.

1. Submit Your Final Full Payment Submission (FPS)

Your last Full Payment Submission (FPS) for the tax year must be sent on or before your employees’ last payday. Make sure you:

  • Indicate that this is your final submission for the year in your payroll software.

  • Report all employees paid, even if they’ve left during the year.

2. Send Your Employer Payment Summary (EPS)

If you’ve reclaimed statutory payments (like SSP or SMP) or haven't paid anyone in a tax month, you’ll need to send an EPS by 19 April 2025.

This ensures that HMRC has a full picture of your liabilities for the year.

3. Provide P60s to All Eligible Employees

You must give a P60 to every employee who was on your payroll on 5 April 2025. This shows their total pay and deductions for the tax year.

  • Deadline: 31 May 2025

  • How: Most payroll software can generate P60s automatically.

4. Review Employee Details and Records

Check your employee data is accurate and up to date:

  • Full names (no nicknames or abbreviations)

  • National Insurance numbers

  • Dates of birth

  • Start and leaving dates

These details ensure HMRC can process your submissions without errors or delays.

5. Report Employee Benefits (If Applicable)

If you’ve provided benefits like company cars or private medical insurance, you’ll need to:

  • Register for payrolling benefits (if you haven’t already)

  • Or submit P11D and P11D(b) forms by 6 July 2025

  • Pay any Class 1A NIC by 22 July 2025 (or 19 July by post)

6. Prepare for the New Tax Year (2025/26)

Finally, get ready to hit the ground running in the new tax year:

  • Update your payroll software with the new tax codes and thresholds

  • Issue new starter forms or P45s where needed

  • Keep your eye on HMRC updates throughout the year
